How does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic aligner trays to gradually bring the teeth into a more beautiful orientation. Each set of alignment trays represents your smile one step closer to the ideal end results. A patient simply needs to wear each set of alignment trays in the series for about two weeks each. Then, you simply exchange your current set of aligners for the next set in the series until you achieve a perfectly straight smile. Our patients love it because the trays are practically invisible, and they can easily take them off whenever they need to eat, brush their teeth, or attend a special event. Plus, since the trays never need to be adjusted or tightened like braces, you’ll save time because you won’t have to make as many visits to Southland Dental to monitor your progress. Also, in many cases, Invisalign is actually able to work much faster than traditional orthodontics! In most cases, you’ll likely be done with your entire alignment tray orthodontic system in under a year.
Who Should Consider Invisalign?
Invisalign is a great option to correct almost any orthodontic issues. Some of the reasons patients (teens and adults) choose Invisalign include:
- With fewer, shorter trips to the office, patients with busy schedules may be more likely to keep up with their Invisalign orthodontic treatment than traditional braces
- Patients with allergies or sensitivities to metal may benefit from treatment using plastic aligners rather than metallic brackets and wires
- Those who play wind instruments may want to protect their embouchure, which is not always possible when using bracket and wire braces
- Those who regularly engage in contact sports where brackets and wires increase the risk for irritation or injury to the soft tissue
- Maintaining a professional image while straightening smiles
- Helping patients with sensitive teeth, gums, or gag reflexes achieve a flawless, straight smile without unnecessary discomfort
How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Last?
Every patient’s Invisalign treatment plan is different. Your specific plan length will depend on the number of alignment trays needed to move your teeth into their ideal positions. In most cases, patients are able to see their desired results in eight to eighteen months. Most traditional bracket and wire braces plans take eighteen months or longer, so you will save a significant amount of time by choosing Invisalign orthodontics.
Do I Have to Change my Diet During Invisalign Treatment?
You don’t. Because you can remove your Invisalign trays, patients are able to maintain their regular diets and oral hygiene routines throughout treatment with Invisalign orthodontics. This makes Invisalign a great option for patients who have specialized diets and those who struggle with maintaining their oral health.
How do I Care for My Invisalign trays?
First thing in the morning and before bed, you should remove your aligners to brush and floss your teeth and clean your Invisalign trays. You should rinse out your aligners with cool water, and you may also want to brush the aligners to remove any sticky plaque. Between meals, you should remove your aligners and rinse them out. Preferably, you should brush your teeth and aligners after meals in addition to your regular morning and evening tooth brushing and flossing. This ensures no food or plaques are trapped against your teeth for an extended time period, elevating your risk for cavities.
What Happens After Invisalign Orthodontic Treatment?
Many patients aren’t aware that they will still need to wear a retainer for a year or longer after orthodontic treatment. When teeth are shifted into alignment over the course of orthodontic treatment, the underlying supportive bone and soft tissue needs time to reconnect with the root system to ensure teeth stay in their new position. Retainers hold your teeth in place while these supportive tissues are renewed. Luckily, we are often able to use clear retainers that resemble your Invisalign trays, so you won’t have to worry about negative impact on your appearance while you’re wearing the retainers.
