Mouthguards/Sportsguards
Sports related injuries are the leading cause of tooth loss among people under the age of 25, so whether you’re participating in the big game or just on the field for practice protecting your smile should be a top priority. Many of the Southland Smiles patients we treat have tried store bought, one size fits all styles of athletic mouthguards. While these solutions offer adequate protection from many sports related injuries, they are often bulky or uncomfortable. This leads patients to wear their guards inconsistently or cease compliance altogether. Our team custom crafts mouthguards for athletes that offer numerous advantages over the store bought varieties including:
- Last longer than the store bought solutions that are often damaged or bent quickly
- Offer increased comfort compared with one size fits all or boil and bite solutions which many people find make them gag or impeded their breathing
- Provide superior protection as they are fitted perfectly around your unique smile holding your teeth in their ideal position
- Patients are much more likely to wear a custom guard consistently as it provides superior comfort
We recommend athletes wear sportsguards when engaging in a variety of sports. Some of these sports seem apparent like football, hockey, and rugby. However, patients who participate in less contact heavy sports like track, skiing, and swimming should also wear a sportsguard. A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that patients should wear a mouthguard during any athletic competition where the smile can come in contact with other players, sports equipment, or hard surfaces.
